ZiTEL to Invest $7.7 Million in Private Funding for Franklin County Fiber Broadband Expansion. Total Project Investment of $12.3 Million to Bring High-Speed Internet to 3,129 Homes and Businesses
ZiTEL is excited to announce its significant expansion into Franklin County, with plans to bring high-speed fiber broadband to the region. This ambitious project, totaling an investment of $12,265,643, includes $10,000 from Franklin County and a substantial private funding contribution of $7,727,355 by ZiTEL. Supported by a state grant of $4,538,288, this initiative aims to cover 229 miles of fiber, providing essential internet access to 3,129 homes and businesses.
Rodney Gray, COO of ZiTEL shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “ZiTEL is very excited to bring our services to Franklin County. This has been in the cards for our growth for years, and the fact that we can bring fast internet service to the citizens of Franklin County is a great thing. I would like to extend a thank you to the county Board of Supervisors and County admin staff, especially Ms. Lorie Smith of the Gills Creek District and County Administrator Steve Sandy for their tireless efforts in getting this project off the ground and working to bring a much-needed utility to the citizens of Franklin County.”
The project kick-off date is yet to be determined, but ZiTEL is prepared to begin construction in 2024, pending contract sign-offs. This initiative aligns with ZiTEL’s mission to provide reliable, cutting-edge internet solutions to underserved areas, fostering community growth and economic development.
Governor Glenn Youngkin recently announced more than $41 million in grants through the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative (VATI) for 10 broadband construction projects serving 20 localities throughout Virginia, with ZiTEL’s Franklin County project being a key beneficiary. The VATI program aims to create strong, competitive communities throughout the Commonwealth by enabling the development and utilization of advanced telecommunications infrastructure. This year’s funding leverages more than $75.7 million in additional funding from local governments and internet service providers.
“Virginia continues to be a national leader for closing the digital divide, and today’s announcement brings us one step closer to becoming the first state in the nation to reach statewide universal broadband coverage,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “In our increasingly digital world, having access to high-speed broadband isn’t a luxury; it’s a prerequisite to participate in daily life.”
“Virginia is at the forefront in the nation to reach statewide universal broadband coverage and crafting effective strategies to bridge the digital divide,” added Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick. “Closing the digital divide is paramount to growing Virginia’s economy, supporting underserved communities, and ensuring that all Virginians have the resources they need to thrive.”
